IT Department is sending mails/sms on transactions made by them
In a recent X post (Twitter), I T Department has confirmed that it has sent communication to certain taxpayers by email/sms alerts. Of course, taxpayers need to exercise due diligence to check whether such emails/sms alerts have originated from IT Department before responding to them, lest they become victims to fake emails/sms. The post of IT Dpartment is shared hereunder:
Income Tax India
Some references have come to the notice of the Income Tax Department regarding recent communication sent to taxpayers pertaining to transaction(s) made by them.
Taxpayers may please note that such communication is to facilitate the taxpayers & make them aware of the information available with the ITD regarding the transactions reported by the Reporting Entities during the year.
The communication is just an advisory sent in only those cases where there is an apparent significant gap between disclosures in the ITR & information as received from the Reporting Entities.
The objective of the communication is to provide an opportunity to taxpayers for voluntary correction by reviewing their AIS & facilitate them to provide their feedback online on the Compliance Portal of Income Tax Department &, if necessary, revise their Returns already filed OR to file the belated Return if not filed, so far.
The last date for revising or filing belated return for AY 2025-26 is 31st December 2025. Taxpayers are requested to respond promptly via Compliance Portal if discrepancies exist or ignore if your filing is correct.

IT Department access taxpayer’s social media accounts only in exceptional cases
Taxpayers can breathe easy as with the rolling out of new IT Act 2025 rumor was circulating that IT Department will access all social media accounts of the taxpayers. Now IT Department has clarified in a Face Book post the existing norm that only in cases of IT survey and search social media accounts of the targeted taxpayers will be accessed. The post is shared for the benefit of taxpayers.
“A post by @IndianTechGuide claims that from April 1, 2026, the Income Tax Department will have the ‘authority’ to access your social media, emails, and other digital platforms to curb tax evasion.
#PIBFactCheck
❌The claim being made in this post is #misleading!
Here’s the real picture:
✅ The provisions of section 247 of the Income Tax Act 2025 are strictly limited to Search and Survey operations.
✅ Unless a taxpayer is undergoing a formal search operation due to evidence of significant tax evasion, the department has no power to access their private digital spaces.
✅ The powers cannot be used for routine information gathering/processing, or even for cases under scrutiny assessment.
✅ These measures are specifically designed to target black money and large-scale evasion during search and survey, not the everyday law-abiding citizen
✅ The power to seize documents and evidence during search and survey operations has existed since the 1961 Act.”
